In BVNA’s 60th year, we’re continuing to ensure the veterinary nursing voice is heard loud and clear.
An integral contribution to this voice comes from SVNs – ensuring that students are represented in the work we do, and enriching our Council with the student perspective. You are the future of the VN profession, and we hugely value the SVN seats that we have included on BVNA Council since 2015.
Hear from current Student BVNA Council member, Kate Davies:

“I’m Kate and I am currently in my final year of VN training. I am a student member of the BVNA Council and a student veterinary nurse. I began my eight-year career in the veterinary field as a VCA, and remained one for six years until deciding to enrol in a veterinary nursing programme.
“I chose to put myself forward to become a BVNA Council member because I am passionate about the veterinary industry and want to make a difference. I have also had a huge appreciation for the BVNA and what they do for, not just RVNs, but also SVNs and VCAs.
“Being a BVNA Council member requires a lot more effort than others may realise! It’s interesting to be part of all the discussions that are involved. I really like watching how things operate behind the scenes.”
Our activities to support and progress the veterinary nursing profession rely on having a strong Council team to guide the association. We need to ensure we have a Council that is fit for now and the future – and the perspective of current SVNs is critical to help us achieve this.
SVN candidates must be:
- A current, student member of the BVNA (3 student members have one seat, one vote).
- Able to attend three virtual Council meetings and three in-person meetings each year – generally shared between SVN seat holders.
- Enrolled with the RCVS as an SVN at the time of application.
We are committed to equality of opportunity, and therefore welcome applications from members of under-represented groups. We also encourage applications from those working in more niche areas of veterinary nursing, such as those completing their VN training with equine focus.
Please do not hesitate to contact us at bvna@bvna.co.uk if you should have any questions about the application process. Or, if you have questions about the role itself, any of our Council team would be very happy to provide insight into their role and responsibilities to help you to decide if it’s for you.
It is an exciting time to be a BVNA Council Member! We look forward to receiving applications from those who are ready to represent our incredible profession, as BVNA continues to shape the future of veterinary nursing.
