ABSTRACT: On 21 March 2013, a group of veterinary nurses and student nurses from Plumpton College set off for two weeks of conservation study and safari in South Africa. This article describes the team’s adventures and experiences, and in so doing, puts into perspective some of the perceived trials and tribulations’ of everyday veterinary practice in the UK.

Frances Gaudiano qualified as a veterinary nurse in 1998 while working at the RSPCA Hospital in North London. She has also worked in referral practice and been involved with clinical trials. Currently she is deputy head nurse at Farthings Veterinary Group in Horsham, West Sussex. Frances is author of Veterinary Dermatology: A Manual for Nurses and Technicians.
