ABSTRACT: Foals are often presented to a clinic with diarrhoea with varying clinical signs from moderate to severe. This article outlines the common causes of diarrhoea in foals, separating into infectious and non-infectious categories. The treatment and nursing care of the patient is discussed in detail covering the topics of analegesia, nutrition, fluid therapy, medications, general nursing care and finally biosecurity and infection control.

Samantha Feighery graduated from UCD with a First class Honours Bachelor of Science(Hons) Veterinary Nursing in June 2013. After graduating she moved to Kentucky in 2013 to work at to Hagyard Equine Medical Centre for the breeding season. She then begin a role at University of Glasgow, Weipers Centre Equine Hospital. With a keen interest in neonatal nursing, she moved to Newmarket and I am now based at Rossdales Equine Hospital.
