I joined BVNA Council in October 2016. I wanted to join as I felt it would be a good experience and that it was about time I looked at giving something back to the profession that has been such a huge part of me and my life since 1991. I had never been on any committees or working groups previously so had no clear expectations at all.
I attended BVNA in Harlow for the first time in September 2016 to observe a council meeting. I remember sitting and watching and feeling rather unsure of myself, but everyone made me feel really welcome – I knew no one else there. By March of 2017, I was Junior Vice President. I held the role of President for 2 years and I stood down at end of my Senior Vice President year in October 2020.
I was also the BVNA representative member on:
- RCVS Legislative Working Party
- Chair of Vet Nurse Futures Project Board
- BVA Vet Led Team
My time on council was amazing. I really enjoyed being a part of the decision-making process that helped to shape our profession, and I was very fortunate in working alongside some really passionate and effective individuals. Not only do I feel I have given something back to the profession, but I also learnt and grew myself professionally and personally. Some of the friends I have made will be friends for life.
I never imagined I would be President so soon after joining council. It really was an amazing experience, and I would urge anyone who may be considering standing for election to go for it. You don’t need to have any extra qualifications, or to be a specialist, or to have been qualified for years and years. You do need to be committed, passionate and be willing to contribute to the discussion, to give your opinion and to have integrity.
If anyone is unsure about standing for council, I would be more than happy to chat! You can get in touch via social media or send me a message via the BVNA members portal.
