ABSTRACT This article describes an avian research technician role, in which veterinary nursing skills are used to support the welfare of birds in a university research environment. Research in the facility focuses on avian flight biomechanics and energetics, using bio-logging, motion capture and respirometry. Rather than simply managing the birds, the role contributes to their overall health and comfort, through daily observation, body condition scoring, weighing, feeding support and the treatment of minor problems. Behavioural training of the birds, which also forms part of the role, helps keep them fit for work and reduces stress. The use of positive reinforcement and habituation is especially important, as it allows the birds to become familiar with handling and equipment in a calm and controlled way. The article also explains how practical veterinary knowledge supports prompt identification of illness or injury and humane decision- making when birds need veterinary care. Overall, the article demonstrates that veterinary nurses can improve animal welfare by bringing close observation, handling skills, clinical awareness and a welfare-led approach to birds in research.
