Making your first step into veterinary nursing: the essential role of the Veterinary Care Assistant (VCA)
The role of the VCA is often the first step into the veterinary nursing profession. While many do progress to become Registered Veterinary Nurses (RVNs), the VCA is a highly valued member of the team. They have an essential role within many aspects of in-patient care and the smooth running of the practice.
This webinar aims to highlight the key tasks undertaken by the VCA, their role within the veterinary team, and also potential opportunities for future career progression.
The session is suitable for:
- Those considering veterinary nursing as a career, and wondering where to start
- VCAs who would like more information on where the role can progress to
- Vets, RVNs and practice managers wishing to learn more about how VCAs can be utilised in their practice, to maximise the potential of their team
This webinar will cover:
- Practice structure and dynamics
- What VCAs ‘can’ do in practice
- What VCAs ‘should’ do in practice
- Opportunities for career progression
- How BVNA can support VCAs in their career journey

Hi I’m Emma. I have been working in the veterinary industry since 1999 and qualified as a veterinary nurse in 2002. I enjoy all aspects of the role, particularly anaesthesia, theatre practice and ECC. I currently work at a first opinion and referral hospital part-time as Lead Referral Surgery Nurse.
I am also a level three veterinary nursing tutor at Bottle Green Training in Derbyshire and love sharing my knowledge and expertise with the next generation of veterinary nurses.
I joined BVNA council in October 2022 and thoroughly enjoy this role, working with like-minded people as myself in promoting and supporting veterinary nurses and the veterinary nursing profession.
In my spare time I love spending time with my family and visiting new places. I especially enjoy live music and ensure I find time for a few gigs and a couple of festivals each year.
