Lecture Synopsis:

With the dramatic increase in ownership of brachycephalic breed dogs in the UK, vet practices are treating these dogs for both routine procedure, surgery and diseases relating to their anatomic conformation. With this, veterinary nurses will play a crucial role in their care and support throughout their anaesthesia and recovery period. This talk will discuss the specific nursing considerations for these patients and how we can make sure we are providing the best care possible in what can sometimes be challenging cases to manage.

Learning Points:

  • Anatomical conformation of brachy breeds and how this might affect anaesthesia requirements
  • Hospitalisation and environmental considerations
  • Observations and what to have ready for emergencies
  • Managing the airway and ventilation
