Intravenous fluid therapy can have massive effects on the course of treatment for emergent and critical patients. As nurses we should be familiar with the different types of intravenous access and which situations they are useful in. Nurses are going to be caring for these patients and should understand how to care for catheters while they are in place. Not all fluids are the same and have indications and contraindications for use, we will look at the different fluids types available and when they should and should not be used. We will look at how to monitor fluid therapy to see if we are having success or if we need to do more.

Learning Points:

  • Intravenous access types, indications and contraindications
  • Caring for Intravenous catheter sites
  • Fluid types, indications and contraindications
  • Monitoring fluid therapy
