International Cat Care are the BVNA 2021-2022 chosen charity and custodians of International Cat Day, so it seems fitting that we share all of the wonderful resources available to celebrate this day!

International Cat Day takes place on 8th August, but the campaign has rolled out for 5 weeks prior to this date. The hashtag for this year is #BeCatCurios and the theme is ‘Cat Friendly Resources’, focusing on the essential resources cats need in order to maintain good welfare. The campaign doesn’t just cover resources for pet cats, but also unowned cats, who may have different needs due to their lifestyle and temperament. Cat caregivers also had the opportunity to put forward names for this year’s ambassador cats, with Domino (pet cat) and McTatters (unowned cat) being the final names as chosen by the International Cat Care Feline Wellbeing Panel.

Key feline resources covered in the campaign include:

  • Safe places
  • Travel
  • Scent communication
  • Toileting
  • Predatory behaviour

International Cat Care have also teamed up with illustrator Lili Chin, who has provided some beautiful illustrations for infographics, which demonstrate how to provide the most appropriate cat-friendly resources to cats.

Competitions are also being run throughout the campaign too, with a chance for people to win prizes for themselves or their cat!

There is also a fantastic resource hub available for anyone who wants to download the infographics. These are useful for veterinary nurses, who can share the infographics on their practice social media pages or at their clinic e.g., in the waiting area

Events taking place on International Cat Day itself (8th August) Include:

  • Some top tips from feline experts at ISFM Feline Fine Congress in Rhodes this year
  • Minding Mittens bedtime story from author and veterinary surgeon Aisling O’Keeffe
  • Expert panel Q&A session to answer questions on cat-friendly resources (including BVNA President Alex Taylor)
