Learning outcomes:

• Identify a normal ECG and the individual waves

• Describe where each part of the ECG originates from

• Identify abnormal ECGS, to include Ventricular premature complexes (VPC) and Atrioventricular (AV) blocks

This talk aims to refresh learners of the anatomy and physiology of the heart before moving on to discuss the electrical activity of the heart and how this translates to an Electrocardiogram (ECG)

Key pointers for the identification of a normal ECG and also those for abnormal complexes will be discussed. With an emphasis on the ability to use your multiparameter monitors to identify basic abnormal rhythms and know when to summon help.

The use of the monitors both inside and outside of theatre will also be covered as well as a brief look as the use of an ECG during a crash situation.
