Each year, Veterinary Nursing Awareness Month (VNAM) shines a light on the vital role veterinary nurses play in animal health and welfare. In 2026, the focus on compassion and empathy feels especially important because these qualities are at the heart of everything veterinary nurses do.
Compassion in veterinary practice is often seen in quiet, everyday moments. It’s in the gentle handling of a nervous patient, the extra time taken to reassure a worried client, and the emotional support offered to colleagues during challenging cases. These actions may go unseen, but they are fundamental to delivering high-quality care.
Empathy, too, is a critical clinical skill. Veterinary nurses balance technical expertise with emotional intelligence, understanding not only the needs of their patients, but also the concerns and expectations of the people who care for them. Whether guiding a client through a difficult decision or supporting a team during a busy shift, empathy strengthens trust and improves outcomes across the board.
At Millpledge, we recognise that compassionate care doesn’t happen on its own. It is supported by the right environment, the right tools, and crucially by listening to the people delivering that care every day. Veterinary nurses are at the centre of what we do. By listening to their feedback, understanding the realities of practice, and responding with practical, reliable solutions, we aim to support nurses in providing the best possible care to their patients.
Because when veterinary nurses are supported, they are better able to focus on what matters most: delivering compassionate, empathetic care to every animal and every client they encounter.
This Veterinary Nursing Awareness Month, we thank veterinary nurses for their dedication, their resilience, and the compassion they bring to their profession every single day.
