Following the Chancellor’s Autumn 2025 Budget Statement made on Wednesday 26th November, BVNA is delighted at the UK Government’s commitment to consult on potential reform of the Veterinary Surgeons Act 1966.

Responding to this news, BVNA President Sarah Holliday commented, “BVNA has long been campaigning for reform of the outdated Veterinary Surgeons Act 1966, in favour of modern legislation which truly reflects the veterinary landscape of today and of the future. We’re delighted to see significant steps being made towards new legislation becoming a reality.

“Veterinary nursing has evolved beyond all recognition in the past 60 years. It is time legislation also evolves to reflect the skilled and professional workforce we are today – including the vital protection of the ‘veterinary nurse’ title, alongside clearer career pathways and progression opportunities.

“Throughout 2025 so far, BVNA has been working closely alongside the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra), considering potential legislative reform and what this could achieve. The consultation process is a real opportunity for veterinary nurses to use their voice in order to shape this future legislation and, ultimately, the future for our profession. We urge veterinary nurses to engage with the consultation when it launches, which we anticipate will be within the coming weeks”.
