Wendy Nevins RVN served as BVNA President between 2017 and 2019. In this blog, Wendy reflects on the progress she has witnessed during her time in the profession, including the development of education opportunities, and the wider impact of RVNs outside of direct patient care.

“Looking back on my career as a veterinary nurse, it’s incredible to see just how much the profession has evolved. When I first started, veterinary nursing was still striving for the recognition it deserved. We were always dedicated to patient care, but our role wasn’t always fully understood or appreciated. Over the years, that has changed significantly. Today, veterinary nurses are recognised as vital members of the veterinary team, with clearer professional pathways, opportunities for specialisation, and a real voice within the industry.

“One of the biggest transformations I’ve witnessed is in education and professional development. The introduction of the register for veterinary nurses, the growing emphasis on lifelong learning, and the expansion of our clinical skills have taken the profession to another level. We’re making an impact beyond direct patient care, playing an active role in mental health support, sustainability initiatives, and integrating new technology into veterinary practice.

“During my time as BVNA President, I had the privilege of working alongside some of the most passionate and dedicated people in the profession. The BVNA has been a driving force in pushing the profession forward, ensuring that veterinary nurses have a platform to influence change and shape the future. As we celebrate 60 years of BVNA, I feel incredibly proud of how far we’ve come and excited about what’s ahead. With the dedication, resilience, and passion of veterinary nurses, I have no doubt that the profession will continue to grow stronger, ensuring the very best care for our patients and clients.”
