The VNJ is an international peer-reviewed journal for all levels of veterinary nurses.

The VNJ is written by you for you. It contains a wide range of content from informal life experience pieces to peer-reviewed clinical articles. No matter what level of training or how much experience you have, there will be something there for you to enjoy and learn from. Our aim is not only to entertain you but also to improve nursing practice using evidence-based veterinary nursing practice.

The journal is available bi-monthly as either digital as an online flipbook or as a printed version posted to your home. If you want to only receive the digital version, please go to your membership page to opt-out of receiving a printed version of the VNJ.

Content

You are sure to find something to interest you as there are plenty of clinical articles, case studies and research projects to whet your appetite. Test your knowledge in the quizzes, read about someone’s experience volunteering abroad or gather tips on how to improve your patient’s experience. You can submit photos of your favourite patient, share your career progression experiences and let people know how to support colleagues with chronic illness.

There are sections for Educators to share best practices, Students to share their tips on how to manage training, publish their assignments and discuss patient care. Clinical coaches can share solutions to challenges, and tips for mentoring students.

The information section will give you news on Council Members representing you in working groups, BVNA projects such as leading the Protect the Title campaign, VN Future updates and news from RCVS and other veterinary stakeholders.

Writing for the VNJ

Do you have an idea, a passion, a patient case close to your heart? Contact me to see how we can transform your thoughts into an article. There are lots of ways you can get involved, create a quiz, give handy tips on how to remove the Povidone stain on the floor, respond to opinion pieces or articles, you can even ask specific questions to the Council Members; just email vnj@bvna.co.uk. Remember that you will be paid for any articles and features that you have published ranging from £40-£100 depending on the type of content and length of the article.

Writing also counts towards your CPD hours. The RCVS have said that although they don’t have specific guidance on how much time you can claim, all the time you spend writing an article can be counted as CPD.

Academic mentor

Enthusiastic mentors are available to help you with the academic writing process. They will work with you to improve your writing style and phrasing to prepare your article for publication. If you would like a mentor, please email vnj@bvna.co.uk

Peer review

The formal articles are read by our peer reviewers who are subject matter experts who volunteer their time to support our authors. We use a double-blind system which means the author doesn’t know who will be reviewing their article and the peer reviewer doesn’t know who the author is. This means you will receive unbiased feedback to help you improve your article and prepare it for publication.

Submission process

Select your article template and fill in the document. Send your template, and author details document to vnj@bvna.co,uk

You will need to enter your article into the specific sections on the template of your choice and complete the Author Details and Checklist template along with a high quality photograph of yourself. If you don’t see what you are looking for, please contact the Editor in Chief by emailing vnj@bvna.co.uk

Formal articles will be sent to two peer reviewers for feedback. Our reviewers are all volunteers with busy lives and it may take time to get your feedback, just email vnj@bvna.co.uk to see where your article is in the process. Their feedback may contain comments to help improve your article and prepare it for publication. You can make adjustments to your documents according to the feedback given or you can explain why you want to leave it as it is. You may find that your article is returned a couple of times before it is ready to print.

Once approved, your article will be formatted by our publishers. You will be asked to proofread and check your article four weeks prior to publication as this is the last time you will see it before it is published.

We also have the option to publish digitally only on our digital platform where you can find bonus material.
